In 1941, during the height of World War II, France issued a postage stamp that raised funds for cancer research. When i discovered this stamp I was immediately fascinated with the story, and the tenacity of the human spirit on display. A disease that was only faintly understood at the time, took precedent to a people who were under literal siege. This fragrance, that displays that particular postage stamp, was created to honour that perseverance.

The gladiolus flower, being the heart of this perfume as well as it’s namesake. It was given to cancer patients who have survived the disease. Sometimes referred to as “sword lilies”, they are a consummate symbol of human steadfastness against impossible odds, and a marking that the battle is over. Gladiolus flowers do not have an overpowering floral scent, but more an earthy green aroma, which i think anchors the entire formula in the serious nature of it’s intention; The rose, a symbol of compassion, and respect for those lost, and those who have lost. These flowers have ancient parallels to love, beauty, and emotion; Black Pepper, in overdose is on full display. All throughout history it has been used as a purification method, to ward off evil and negative energies; and finally plant nectar. Sweet, sustaining, and familiar. Overall, Gladius is a brazen floral with a sharp edge. It sits somewhere between green, and spicy, and is far from traditional.

This horrible disease has touched almost everyone in some way, and it’s impact in the lives of those around me, especially as of late, has been tremendous. I have channeled all of that sentiment into a formula that i think is as complex, and emotive as those feelings.
