Spathe Botanicals ~ Manitou ~ Unisex Extrait De Parfum 30ml
This perfume is woody, sticky, heady, floral.
Manitou is the spiritual and fundamental life force in the theologies of Algonquian peoples. It is omnipresent and manifests everywhere: organisms, the environment, events, everything and everywhere. I was taught loosely of Manitou by my late friend, Erich, who was born and raised on a reservation across the border in Michigan. He also spoke at length about the great loss of life and well being for thousands of Indigenous women and children not only in the United States, but in Canada as well. For the better part of a decade his stories have echoed in my mind. This perfume is an answer to those feelings of helplessness for a people that I feel a connection with through one of my passed best friends, and through my own (albeit distant) Metis heritage.
The Medicine Wheel is used as a holistic teaching tool. It consists of four quadrants that relate to the cardinal directions: East, South, West, and North. Each direction is represented by specific teachings and emblems, such as four colours, four seasons, and the four stage of life. The circle symbolizes and resembles many cycles in the natural world and is a symbol of equity. There are four Sacred Medicines: Tobacco, cedar, sage, and sweetgrass. All four of these ingredients have been used in this perfume, in addition to some scents that speak true to native tradition and heritage. Lavender being a large part of that, as well, patchouli being widely used on ceremonial garb during Powwow. Additionally, 50% of the core formula for the perfume have been sourced from indigenous suppliers in Canada.
10$ from any sale of this perfume will be donated to the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal.
This perfume is woody, sticky, heady, and floral.

Wow. Such an excellent perfume, with an excellent story. I had smelled this perfume without understanding the sentiment behind it, and I already loved it. But reading this full description has made me fall completely in love. Thank you for creating this!

WOW! This might be my new favourite perfume. Strong, long lasting, subtle intimate projection, very complex and warm and cozy. Just perfect! 11/10!!!

This fragrance sticks to me like glue. I’m not sure if it’s my skin chemistry but I swear I can still smell it a little bit even after a shower! Use with caution, but definitely a worthwhile buy. Not a single complaint to be had

Manitou, upon first spray, is a fairly challenging fragrance for me. It instantly reminds me of damp earth, similar to something like Zoologist Bat. I think that earthiness is a combination of the sweetgrass, cedar and patchouli creating a wet, green petrichor quality. It took about 15 minutes for Manitou to tame before I started to enjoy it more.
Lavender is listed as a note, and while I get lavender in the composition, it feels as if the entire lavender plant was used, flower stem and all. Sage is also listed, and it is definitely adding an herbal, green quality that further amplifies the green, earthy tone of the perfume.
The tobacco is not the trendy, boozy cuban style tobacco that many perfumes today lean towards. Rather, this is dry, unburned cigarette tobacco. Very natural and dusty.
Manitou uses indigenous ingredients, many sourced directly from indigenous suppliers in Canada. If you have ever been to a smudge ceremony, or pow-wow, the scent is unmistakable. This perfume is as if you distilled a smudge bundle into a perfume minus the smoke.
The dry down of Manitou is much more enjoyable than the opening for me. The damp earthiness settles down significantly (but not fully) and the perfume settles into a mainly green and herbal concoction

Smells like the forest floor after rain: earthy, deep, and very verdant. Absolutely gorgeous.
